Connor imagined his mother in the kitchen baking cookies and his dad reading the paper or tinkering with some project. The family gatherings with Aunt Janet and cousins Jax, and Journey. He loved spending summers here with Cade. He pressed the center of his chest. Would he ever get over the loss? He reached for his lifeline—her and moved Ellie in front of him, nestling his body against her as they looked out over the terrain. She rested her head on his chest. She mattered in the deepest way. He wanted to protect her, see her smile, hear her laugh, touch her skin. He didn’t do the emotional crap. He’d given up years ago. Get too close, he’d get burned. He didn’t have it in him to commit to anyone. Not that she’d ever commit to me.

He set the bottle of bubbles on a nearby table and wrapped his arms softly around her mid-section. He painted feathery circles along her stomach and goose bumps spread across her skin. He pulled her hair away from one of her shoulders and nibbled her neck.

Ellie melted against him. He licked at her neck and kissed the top of her head. Jesus Chriiist. He wanted her in a bad way. He lifted her chin, lingering closer, softly rubbing his nose to hers. Her hands went under the tail of his shirt.

He groaned, and his lips touched hers. His tongue slid into her mouth. Euphoria encapsulated him. He lost track of time. He was safe—whole. She matched his movements. He nipped and tugged at her bottom lip.

“Dammit Ellie, you undo me.” He panted to catch his breath, then closed his eyes, trying to keep himself under control. His head tilted to the blue sky above. He could feel the thumping of her heart in her chest. Or was the jack hammering his own?

“Let’s take a stroll of the property before I rip your cute little peasant girl outfit right off you here and now.” He raised his brows. “We need to cool off a bit, and I have a lot to show you.” He directed her to the view ahead. “After that, I’m making you dinner since we haven’t had an official first date yet.” He wrapped his arm over her shoulder. “Protocol, right? An actual dinner date. I want to get something right.” He bit at her jaw, then nuzzled at Ellie’s neck. His whiskers softly scratched her skin. “You know you are the first woman I’ve ever invited here?”

She arched back and tilted her head to the side. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Never?” She giggled.

“You’re the first.”

“Okay… About a date. You made me breakfast already. Could that be considered a date?” she asked.

“I saved your kitchen from burning in your attempt to make breakfast, and then I felt sorry for you because your stomach was growling.” He laughed.

“I’m always hungry, and I’ll almost eat anything. Well, maybe not the atomic green chili again.”

“Deal, no green chili,” Connor replied. “We have all weekend to eat, be lazy, and enjoy the scenery.
